Street artist Banksy has accused clothing retailer Guess of “helping themselves” to his designs without his permission.

On social media, the graffiti artist posted a picture of London’s Regent Street store featuring his 2007 mural “Flower Thrower, asking shoplifters to visit the store.

The post, which currently has over 1.6 million likes, read: “They’ve helped themselves to my artwork without asking, how can it be wrong for you to do the same to their clothes?”

However, after the Instagram post went live, Guess closed the store to the public, placed security outside and covered up the window display.

According to the fashion retailers website, the collection of clothing is in partnership with Brandalised, a graffiti licensing company which “offers Banksy fans affordable graffiti collectibles”.

Speaking about the collection last month, Guess chief creative officer Paul Marciano said: “The graffiti of Banksy has had a phenomenal influence that resonates throughout popular culture,”

“This new capsule collection with Brandalised is a way for fashion to show its gratitude.”
