Urban Outfitters owner posts record third quarter sales

Urban Outfitters owner URBN posted record sales of £1.02bn in its third quarter results, despite revenues falling at its main retail chain.

Profit for the quarter hit £66m for the three months to 31st October as sales were up 9% compared to the same time last year.

Sales rose more than 22% at Free People and 13% at Anthropologie but fell 14% at Urban Outfitters.

The group’s wholesale sales dipped 3.6% due to a 3.5% drop in Free People wholesale revenues.

Meanwhile, sales at its clothing rental company Nuuly were up by £24m, mainly caused by a 68% rise in subscribers compared to the same period last year.

Total group sales rose to a record £2.93bn for the nine months to 31 October.

URBN chief executive Richard A. Hayne said: “As we enter the holiday season the consumer continues to react positively to our assortments and marketing campaigns at four out of five of our brands which leaves us confident we can continue to drive revenue and earnings growth in the fourth quarter.”
