Matalan hires Poundland finance boss as long-time CFO exits

Matalan has hired Poundland finance director Dave Williams to replace its outgoing CFO Stephen Hill, who has stepped down after 23 years.

Hill will remain with the fashion and home retailer as an adviser to the board for the next few months.

Matalan chief executive Jo Whitfield described Hill as “instrumental in helping to shape [the retailer], bringing significant investment into the business in supporting its ongoing development including the modernisation of our supply chain, developing our omnichannel capabilities, and opening lots of fantastic new stores”.

“His extensive financial, commercial and leadership qualities have proved invaluable and helped steer Matalan to a solid financial footing,” she added.

Hill’s successor Williams will join Matalan first as CFO designate and after a short handover, will take up the full-time position.

Williams has spent the last five years at Poundland as its finance director, leading its property, legal and assurance functions, to support the discount chain’s rapid growth.

Prior to that, he worked as a CFO for The Original Factory Shop and commercial director at JD Sports.
