M&S is set to open a new, larger food store on Tottenham Court Road next week as it continues to expand its London estate.

The retailer will relocate from its existing store at 55 Tottenham Court Road to a new site at 15 to 17 Tottenham Court Road on Tuesday 9 June.

The new branch will be 45 per cent larger than its current location and closer to the nearby Tottenham Court Road station, giving shoppers access to a wider M&S Food range.

The store will feature an in-store bakery, a coffee counter serving barista-made takeaway drinks and a Mai sushi counter.

M&S is pushing ahead with a wider investment programme across the capital, with new food stores also planned for Bell Green Retail Park in Sydenham and The Elephant Development in Elephant and Castle later this year.

The London openings are expected to create more than 150 jobs.

M&S opened a new food store in Tooting Broadway last week, marking its return to the area after 18 years. The branch opened at a former Wilko site on Mitcham Road.

The retailer is also investing in its existing London stores, including the upper two floors of its Pantheon Oxford Street flagship, which are due to reopen in July with refreshed menswear, kidswear, lingerie and home departments.

Its Bankside store on Southwark Street is also being upgraded and is expected to reopen in July, while its Richmond branch is set for a makeover.

M&S Food managing director Alex Freudmann said: “In this new phase of our transformation, we are reinvesting for growth and in London that means opening new food stores with the right range for families, commuters and local residents.”

The expansion forms part of M&S’ plan to double the size of its food business by growing its store footprint and expanding existing shops.

Outside London, M&S Food branches in Hatfield, Luton, Farnham and Oxfordshire have all recently opened.

However, the retailer is also continuing to rotate its estate, with its long-standing Oxford Street store in Swansea closing after 70 years on the high street.

M&S has also proposed closing its Simply Food store in Banstead, Surrey, although it said it remained keen to find a larger alternative location in the area.

M&S regional manager Jolita Erminaite said the Banstead branch was one of its smallest stores and its performance had “not been where it needs to be”.

She added: “We have therefore made the tough decision to propose the store’s closure. We remain keen to find a suitable, alternative bigger location at Banstead in future, as part of our continued investment across Surrey.”
