Superdrug and Savers gear up for UK expansion

// Superdrug & Savers to open 80 new stores between them this year
// 50 new stores planned for Savers and 30 for Superdrug

Superdrug and Savers have reportedly announced expansion plans across the UK this year in a bid to “support” the high street.

The sister health & beauty retailers have planned for 80 new stores between them this year, The Grocer reported.

The proposal includes around 50 new stores for Savers and 30 for Superdrug, which is 25 more stores than parent company AS Watson Holdings opened in 2018.

However, AS Watson is currently pushing ahead with plans to close some of the existing Superdrug stores, in a bid to reopen them as the more discount-focused Savers.

The company has already transformed Superdrugs in Hawick and Galashiels, both in the Scottish Borders, along with one in Penrith, Cumbria.

Around 20 more Superdrug stores are set to be converted this year.

The plans stand to give Savers a total of 70 new stores in 2020 while Superdrug will gain a 10 units.

The company said it was “supporting” the high street by opening new stores in towns and cities across the UK.

Savers has recently opened stores in Portadown, Leeds, Bristol and West Ealing, while Superdrug has opened in Birmingham, East Kilbride, Chester, London’s South Bank and Jersey.
