Asda is trialling driverless delivery vehicles in what it describes as Britain’s biggest autonomous grocery home delivery trial.

The supermarket giant, in partnership with technology firm Wayve, has added the “self-driving” vehicles to its existing fleet at its Park Royal store in west London.

From today, customers will be randomly selected to have their order delivered by a driverless Jaguar I-Pace electric car.

The autonomous vehicle will be supervised by a Wayve safety driver and an Asda colleague, who will unload the groceries at the customer’s home.

The move is part of a 12-month trial to allow the supermarket chain the ability to deliver groceries autonomously to a catchment area covering more than 72,000 households in London.

Asda vice-president of ecommerce Simon Gregg said: “We believe autonomous technology is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of delivery, not only at our Park Royal store but throughout our operation.”
