L’Occitane Group has announced a three-pillar strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2031 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Adrien Geiger, chief sustainability officer said L’Occitane Group is “aiming to achieve ambitious targets with this commitment.”

“Although our company has many options for transforming its production units, products and distribution the creation of this low-carbon world requires us to develop solutions with our consumers and our partners,” he added.

From its research, the L’Occitane Group has established three key points in its roadmap which includes reducing emissions from energy consumption at factories, warehouses and retail outlets by using renewable energy and improving energy efficiency.

The global beauty brand has been collecting data covering all direct and indirect emission sources since its first carbon assessment in 2008.

Its roadmap also sets out plans to reduce shared-responsibility emissions by finding solutions with partners, suppliers and customers and eliminating air freight by 2030 for transporting products.

Product use plays a large role in the group’s emissions due to customers using hot water when rinsing products. To encourage responsible consumer habits, the group is a member of the 50L Home coalition, which encourages responsible water use.

Finally, the Group aims to conserve and restore ecosystems to neutralise residual emissions. The L’Occitane Group has already invested £39 million (€45 million) in projects to help with carbon sequestration such as the Livelihoods Carbon Fund and the Climate Fund for Nature.

The group’s targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an organisation that encourages companies to address sustainability in ways scientists believe are necessary to achieve Paris Agreement goals.
