Tesco grocery category director, Amit Chitnis, is to join Ocado as its new chief commercial officer later this year.

Chitnis brings almost 10 years experience gained in a variety of roles at Tesco.

Having first started at the supermarket giant in 2014 as head of group strategy, he went on to lead retail operations at Tesco’s west London convenience stores and serve as category head of cooking ingredients and global grocery.

In 2020, he was appointed director of trading at Booker Wholesale, a subsidiary of Tesco, and most recently took on the role of grocery category director last May.

Chitnis will now be taking over the position of chief commercial officer at Ocado from interim CCO and buying director, Rose Price, who is retiring later this year after more than 12 years at the online-only supermarket.

Speaking of the appointment, Ocado said on LinkedIn today: “We’re delighted to have announced the appointment of our new chief commercial officer, Amit Chitnis, who will be joining us later this year.

“Amit has a wealth of retail and grocery experience and we can’t wait for him to start. He will be heading up our commercial team and taking over from Rose Price who will be retiring at the end of year.”

This news comes as Ocado has managed to keep its position in the FTSE 100 index despite experiencing an 85% fall in share price since its peak in September 2020, making it the worst-performing FTSE 100 firm this year.
