Amazon axes dozens of private clothing brands

Amazon has binned dozens of its private clothing brands as it looks to cut costs and fend off antitrust scrutiny.

The online giant has axed 27 of its 30 in house labels, leaving it with just its Essentials, Collection and Aware brands, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Popular items from its discontinued brands will be rebranded to one of the three remaining labels.

Amazon said its private brands business accounts for 1% of total retail sales.

The move comes as the retailer is in talks about exiting the private labels business as a compromise to the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC), if the regulator decides to file a long-awaited antitrust lawsuit against it.

The retailer has faced multiple allegations from a host of critics, including using third-party data to determine which products to sell, preferencing its own goods over independent sellers and requiring such sellers to use its logistics and delivery services.

Amazon, which has denied the claims, is set to meet with the FTC next week over to argue its case against the possible lawsuit.
