Boots and Superdrug roll out NHS Pharmacy First in ‘one of the most significant changes’ in healthcare

Boots and Superdrug have launched NHS Pharmacy First across stores nationwide. Boots termed the development as “one of the most significant changes” in pharmacy healthcare.

From today, consumers have access to advice, treatment and prescription-only medicines for seven common conditions under the new NHS service.

As part of the scheme, patients can seek guidance and get treatment for common health conditions including sinusitis, sore throat, earache, infected insect bite, impetigo, shingles, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections in women, without requiring an appointment.

NHS Pharmacy First is free to access and patients will only be charged for any over-the-counter medicine purchased, which is subject to the standard NHS prescription levy.

Boots UK and Ireland managing director Seb James said: “The launch of Pharmacy First in England is good for patients, pharmacy teams and GPs, and follows the success of similar initiatives in Scotland and Wales.

“The service makes it quicker and easier for patients to access the advice, care and treatment they need, allows our pharmacy team members to further utilise their professional skills and reduces pressures on GP surgeries.

“It is one of the most significant changes in how we can serve our customers and patients in our 175-year history.”

Superdrug pharmacy superintendent Niamh McMillan added: “Pharmacy First is an excellent opportunity for pharmacists to utilise their skills and support the health of their local community with this new service.

“Ahead of the launch, our pharmacists have undertaken additional training which covers all seven clinical conditions, clinical history taking and practical assessment skills, to accommodate the service and ensure our teams can provide the best patient care.”
