Iceland group buying director Andrew Staniland has ditched his impending move to Asda to join Morrisons instead.
Originally scheduled to start in a VP role at Asda in March, Staniland will now take on the position of group trading director and executive committee member at Morrisons in February.
He spent four years at Iceland as trading director and previously worked at fellow grocers Waitrose and Aldi.
Back in July, the news of Staniland’s recruitment was seen as a big win for Asda, where he was set to work under chief commercial officer Kris Comerford amid a slew of senior departures at the grocery giant.

Meanwhile Morrisons group commercial director James Badger will move to a new role as group strategy and transformation director, the grocer confirmed.
Morrisons CEO Rami Baitiéh said: “Andrew is an exceptional talent and I am very pleased to welcome him to Morrisons as the strengthening of our senior team continues.
“Andrew has a very strong record from his recent senior roles at Iceland and Aldi has also worked at Morrisons before in a number of buying roles so he knows us well.
“I want to thank James Badger for the great contribution he has made in his latest role and I know that he will continue to make a real difference in his new role.”
This morning it was revealed that Asda is planning to cut jobs in the team leading its IT overhaul, which is expected to complete early next year.
