First look: Fortnum & Mason to open luxury Cornwall beach huts

Fortnum & Mason will be opening a trio of beach huts later this month ‘inspired by the nostalgia of summers spent on the British coast’ at Watergate Bay near Newquay, Cornwall.

The experience will run from July 25 to September 10, The Daily Mail reported, with two and a half hour booking slots available, with a chef-curated picnic menu crafted by Emily Scott Food.

Although to book a slot in the hut, beachgoers must purchase a Fortnum hamper containing a picnic that “combines the very best fresh dishes from independent Cornish suppliers with the store’s famous picnic products”.

The shacks have been painted Fortnum & Mason’s signature shade of blue-green, and are kitted out with handpicked homeware that features “beautiful rugs and blankets to keep guests warm on chillier summer days”.

The luxury retailer said: “Every beach hut will enjoy the very best hospitality, including a pre-set picnic table, complete with stylish tableware and table service.”

Two picnic options are available, specially designed for two or four people.

The first, named ‘Seaside Picnic’, includes crab sandwiches with summer tomatoes paired with shallots and basil, while the second is a more indulgent experience, the ‘Seaside Feast’, serves smoked Cornish trout, Exmoor caviar, and ale-infused treacle bread and more.

At the start of the year, Fortnum’s re-opened the third floor of its Piccadilly flagship in the West End as a “creative hub” focused on food and drink.

The floor previously housed a menswear department, which was shuttered during the pandemic.

In what the retailer called its biggest investment in the store in a decade, the renovated third floor now hosts cooking demonstrations by international and in-house chefs.
