Shein rekindles interest in snapping up Topshop

Shein is believed to be amongst the retailers still looking to buy Topshop from Asos.

Asos is said to have garnered “non-stop interest” from a number of high-profile retail companies, according to The Times, including fresh interest from Authentic Brands Group (ABG), the owner of Ted Baker, which plunged into administration last month.

Asos bought Topshop, alongside its sister brands Miss Selfridge and Topman, from Arcadia Group in 2021 for £330m.

The retailer was last year said to have been mulling a sale of Topshop in attempts to reduce its growing losses and debts.

A disposal was reported to be one option considered by CEO José Antonio Ramos Calamonte, with Shein and ABG said to have been among interested companies, however this never came to fruition, The Times reported. PrettyLittleThing founder Umar Kamani was also thought to be interested in snapping up the brand.

Earlier this week, Calamonte praised the performance of Topshop, saying he was “very, very happy” with the brand. It comes despite Asos posting an eye-watering £120m loss.

The executive said the ex-high-street staple was “still outperforming the average overall brand” at the online fashion giant.
