Sainsbury’s follows rival Tesco in cutting milk price

// Unlike Tesco, the supermarket did not give a reason for its move

Sainsbury’s will be cutting the price of milk in its stores, following a similar move made by Tesco on Wednesday.

The supermarket said it was reducing the price of its four-pint own-brand bottle to £1.55 but gave no specific reason for its decision, unlike Tesco which said it had made the move because its costs for buying milk had fallen.

The move from both grocery giants comes at a time when food inflation is at its highest level since 1978 with figures showing that food prices increased 18.2% from February 2022 to February this year.

Alongside the cost-cutting for its four-pint bottle, Sainsbury’s is also dropping the price of two pints by 5p to £1,25 and a single pint to 90p.

Sainsbury’s spokesperson said, “With costs going up, we are working hard to keep prices low, especially on the everyday essentials people buy the most. We have reduced the price of our own brand milk to just £1.55 for four pints, £1.25 for two pints and 90p for a pint.

“Our focus on value means that all our customers can be confident that they will receive great deals when they shop with us and do not need to go anywhere else to get the best prices on their weekly shop.”

At the start of the week, Sainsbury’s set out to rival Tesco Clubcard by offering customers up to half price on hundreds of products in stores and online as part of its new loyalty initiative, Nectar Prices.
