Aldi has been recognised as the cheapest grocer for weekly shopping, according to a poll based on value for money.
The German discounter was found to be around £5 less than Big 4 grocer Asda when it came to the average cost of a basket of goods, according to The Grocer’s weekly price comparison.
Aldi’s total shopping basket of £36.73 was £4.47 cheaper than Asda , which came in second place at £41.20.
The Grocer found that Aldi’s basket offered the lowest price for 30 of the 33 items.
“Guest retailer Aldi claimed a convincing pricing win in the final week of the Grocer 33 year, its fourth win from four appearances over the past 12 months,” The Grocer said.
Meanwhile, Morrisons came in third place with an average shopping basket value of £45.44, followed by Tesco at £47.19 and Sainsbury’s at £47.71, while Waitrose’s weekly shopping was valued at £54.95.
“This result shows that yet again we are Britain’s lowest-priced supermarket, which is a key reason why more than a million new shoppers have switched to Aldi from more expensive supermarkets during the last 12 months,” Aldi head of buying Julie Ashfield said.
Aldi currently has 825 stores across the UK, with over 34,000 employees.
