Lakeland will be the latest UK retailer to establish a presence in Australia with announcement it will open 12 shop-in-shops before launching standalone outlets in early 2017.

The news comes after John Lewis and Debenhams recently announced expansion plans for their businesses down under.

Lakeland will initially trade as a shop-in-shop with Australian retail chain The Good Guys from October before its first standalone store opens in the first quarter of 2017.

The Good Guys, who are responsible for managing the UK kitchenware retailer‘s Australian operations, will also roll out the shop-in-shops across its stores around the country over the next two years.

Lakeland already has a footprint in India, the Middle East and Germany.

The company‘s outgoing managing director Sam Rayner said there was “tremendous opportunity” for the brand in Australia, especially since it aligned “perfectly with Australia‘s foodie culture and passion for cooking and baking”.

Lakeland‘s new managing director Catherine Nunn will begin in January.
